Making Hotel Table Linen Last: Laundering, Stain Removal, and Storage
Quality table linen is an investment - a well-made damask cloth should give years of service. The difference between linen that lasts five years and linen that lasts two is almost always how it is laundered and stored.
Washing
Wash white mercerised cotton damask at 60-75°C with a quality detergent; the fabric is made for it. Avoid overloading machines - linen needs room to move for soil to release fully. Coloured linen should be washed at lower temperatures with no chlorine bleach to protect yarn-dyed colourways.
Treat stains before the wash, not after. Oil, wine, and curry stains respond to prompt pre-spotting; once heat-set in a hot wash they are far harder to remove.
Pressing and finishing
Damask should be pressed slightly damp for the crispest finish - this is when the woven pattern shows at its best. Flatwork ironers are ideal for cloths; napkins benefit from a final fold while still warm so the crease sets cleanly.
Storage
Store linen clean, fully dry, and flat or rolled where possible. Avoid plastic wrapping for long-term storage - cotton needs to breathe. Rotate stock evenly so the same cloths are not laundered every cycle; even rotation is the single easiest way to extend the life of a full par of banquet linen.
When to replace
Replace cloths when hems fail repeatedly, when the fabric thins enough to show the table through it, or when greying no longer responds to laundering. A planned replacement cycle - a percentage of the par each year - keeps the dining room consistent and spreads the cost predictably.
