What GSM Means in Table Linen - and the Weight Hotels Should Specify
Ask two mills for a damask table cloth and you may receive fabrics that look similar but wear completely differently. The difference is often a single number: GSM - grams per square metre, the standard measure of fabric weight.
What GSM tells you
GSM measures how much a square metre of fabric weighs. Higher GSM means a heavier, denser cloth: better drape, more opacity, and greater resistance to wear. Lower GSM means a lighter fabric that costs less but wrinkles more easily and thins faster under industrial laundering.
Typical weights for hotel table linen
Quality mercerised cotton damask for hotel dining generally runs 180 to 240 GSM - heavy enough to drape cleanly and survive hundreds of wash cycles. Napkins are usually woven slightly lighter than cloths so they fold crisply. Very light fabrics below 150 GSM may look acceptable new but rarely survive a year of banquet service.
The laundry cost trade-off
Heavier fabric costs more to wash and dry, so GSM is a balance, not a maximum. The right specification is the lightest weight that still delivers the drape, opacity, and lifespan your operation needs - which is why we weave to a specified weight rather than offering a single stock fabric.
How to specify it
When requesting quotes, ask for the GSM alongside fibre and weave. A supplier who cannot state the fabric weight is not in control of their production.
