What Is Mercerised Cotton Damask - and Why Luxury Hotels Insist on It
Walk into the dining room of any heritage palace hotel or five-star chain in India and the tables will almost certainly be dressed in mercerised cotton damask. It has been the benchmark for hospitality table linen for over a century - and for good reason.
What mercerisation does to cotton
Mercerisation is a finishing process in which cotton yarn is treated under tension with a caustic solution. The fibres swell, straighten, and develop a permanent silk-like lustre. More importantly for commercial use, mercerised cotton absorbs dye more evenly, resists shrinkage, and gains roughly 20% in tensile strength - which is what allows quality table linen to survive hundreds of industrial wash cycles.
For a hotel laundry running at high temperatures every day, that strength and colour-fastness translate directly into lower replacement costs and a dining room that always looks freshly dressed.
How damask weaving works
Damask is a jacquard weave in which the pattern is created by the contrast between warp-faced and weft-faced satin weaves. The design - a floral, a geometric, a classic satin band border - is woven into the fabric itself, not printed on top. It cannot fade, peel, or wash out.
Because the pattern shows differently as light moves across the table, damask gives a dining room a quiet richness that printed fabric cannot reproduce.

Luxury hotels choose mercerised cotton damask because it holds a crisp fold, presses to a sharp finish, and presents beautifully under both daylight and candlelight. It is also a natural fibre, which matters to groups with sustainability commitments.
